Beautiful yet often also practical decorative art objects can pass from generation to generation, something which aligns with contemporary ideals and demand for sustainability.
The Art Dual exhibition presents contemporary decorative pieces juxtaposed with charming vintage art items familiar from art and design catalogues of past decades. Visitors can attempt to discover how they may have inspired or influenced contemporary works while observing whether the contemporary creators’ works reveal something new. Is there also vintage art of the coming decades on display?
An the exhibition, you can also celebrate the Independence Day by contemplating the beauty of Finnish art and design! On Finland's Independence Day, Wednesday, 6 December, the exhibition will be open from 12pm to 6pm. During this time, you can see, for example, Kirsti Doukas's specially crafted Northern Light series brooch, designed for Kalevala Koru to commemorate Finland's 100th anniversary. The jewelry piece features a precious gemstone, noble beryl, a rarity among Finnish gemstones.
The question of the boundary between craftsmanship and art is something of an eternal inquiry. How much depends on the works and their techniques, and how much on the views of art institutions? Ultimately, every visitor decides themselves if they perceive something as art, design, or craftsmanship. Whether you can draw a boundary line between craft and art or not is an eternal question. How much is dependent on the artworks and their creator, how much on the views of arts establishment? Perhaps it is the viewers or users who decide this over the course of time.
While we value practicality, are we ready to wear a finely crafted wall art piece as jewelry if the artist suggests it? Artists face no external restrictions in their choices of artwork genre, materials, or techniques as they create something new to impact our souls.
