Björn Weckström (1935 - ) is Finnish sculptor and pioneer of modern Finnish jewelry design. To start with, his works represented clean Scandinavian style. In 1960s Weckström found his own, totally new style that he is most well-known for. It is closer to sculpture than traditional goldsmithing. Weckström's radical use of acrylic combined with silver made the basis for some unprecedented jewelry. His silver-acrylic ring Petrified lake was worn by Yoko Ono on the Dick Cavett Show in 1975. An example of Weckström’s silver jewelry, necklace Planetoid Valleys designed for Lapponia’s Space Silver collection in 1969, was worn by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in the first Star Wars movie. When working in silver, Weckström’s designs draw from nature yet they in several cases they also feature human beings. Weckström has also made use of gold, bronze, marble, glass and precious stones in his jewelry designs. Professor Björn Weckström has been awarded several honours over a career spanning six decades.
