"I’m a jewellery artist who’s roots are strongly in Eastern-Finland forest and lake-area. My backround is in jewellery design that I studied in Lahti Institute of Design and in Aalto University of Art and design. I have my own company in Helsinki and for over ten years I have been working both in goldsmithing and contemporary art jewellery. My work varies from silver and gold jewellery to more recent textile and wearable ob- jects or even installation. With textile I ́m able to freely express myself with colours and shades and invent own techniques to shape the material.
For me art is a try to understand the nature and the phenomena around me. I get inspired by bits and pieces, sticks and stones that I find. Feeling of the surface and materials that have a history interest me. I express myself with earthy forms and nature- shaped feeling. I would describe my working methods as material based and sketch- like. I don’t often draw, I take a piece of metal, fabric, whichever material interests me and work with it, modifying and sculpturing it. In textile as material I’m intrigued by the possibilities of using colour in my expression. Creating my own techniques is an important part of my working process. With my knowledge in goldsmithing I have abil- ity to take care of the detail and put a finishing touch to my works.
The textile works have their origin in a project called LandJewellery that took place in Öland Sweden in 2021. The project brought together artists from around the Baltic Sea working in jewellery field. For me it worked as an impulse to work with the Sea-theme in my own work. " - Elli Hukka
